Q: I have to use a few words in the essay like, WOW, WACs, and Rosie the Riveter. But the one Im having trouble with is 'changing economic roles'. Any ideas?
A: Prior to the war years, women stayed home and raised children. There were a few exceptions - single women who had to work, did so, but the jobs open to them were low paying and not very highly regarded. With the onset of WW2, thousands of men joined up, and all of a sudden there was a serious worker shortage. Women stepped up and filled those roles - they served as riveters, plumbers, pipefitters, pilots, bus drivers -- all the jobs that they had been previously denied. And along with those jobs came bigger paycheques. In famlies where the men were serving in the armed forces, women became the heads of the households, and became accustomed to handling money, writing cheques, balancing budgets, and all that goes with it. So it was a HUGE change in economic roles, from being the little housewife who was given a weekly allowance to run the house (and often the women had no idea of how much their husbands earned) to being the head of the house, having money, and having the freedom to use it.
