    On May 4, 1959, the 1st Grammy Awards were held honoring the

    recordings of 1958. That year, two African Americans won Grammys: Ella

    Fitzgerald and Count Basie.

    The following are the categories they won in:

    JAZZ: Best Jazz Performance, Individual

    Ella Fitzgerald for Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book

    POP: Best Vocal Performance, Female
