Question About Alice Walker's "the Color Purple"

Steven Spielberg directed the film "The Color Purple". It's an

excellent film based on the pulitzer prize winning book by the same

title; A classic piece of African-American feminist literature. I was

just curious what the title symbolizes, and hoping to find out how the

color purple might connect with any part of the story.

  1. Hello hightechfool,

"Note that the novel's title is alluded to in Letter 12, when Celie

associates the color purple with royalty and longs for a purple dress.

But the title undoubtedly comes from a passage near the end of the

novel, in which Shug says that she believes that it 'pisses God off if

you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice

    it.'"
